Ecclesiastes 6:1-2 (NLT) “There is another serious tragedy I have seen under the sun, and it weighs heavily on humanity. God gives some people great wealth and honor and everything they could ever want, but then he doesn’t give them the chance to enjoy these things. They die, and someone else, even a stranger, ends up enjoying their wealth! This is meaningless–a sickening tragedy.”
What a tragedy! To spend all your time working, scratching out a living so that you can store up a few dollars…only to be thrust into a position where you cannot enjoy it because of poor health or death! There are two insights I’d like to share regarding such a sad fate. First, Scripture encourages us not to labor for money, but for things that are eternal…like righteousness, peace, and joy. These transcend earthly existence and sweeten life despite its twists and turns. Secondly, should you be fortunate to gain material wealth, don’t be a hoarder! Learn to enjoy and share what you have, now! There’s no sin in enjoying the things God has granted you. I’m not advocating financial irresponsibility, but don’t be so concerned about tomorrow until you fail to live in today. Also, there’s much joy in giving. Use your wealth, no matter how meager, to be a blessing to others. Seek for ways to bless those who are less fortunate than you or those who you simply desire to bless. What you receive in return is far greater than what you give. Do these things and enjoy a life of success and significance and not one of “meaningless, sickening tragedy.”
